Becoming an Outdoor Woman

posted on

While surfing the internet I came across a workshop by the Division of Wildlife and Becoming an Ohio Outdoors Woman. The Becoming an Ohio Outdoors Woman organization is officially 21 years old and it is a best kept secret for me because I had never heard of it.

It really looked interesting to me so I decided I would give it a try. The dates for this years’ event were October 3 – 5th and I just arrived home from one of the best weekends I have had in a long while. It took place at Recreation Unlimited in Ashley, Ohio which is near Columbus, Ohio. It was a lovely back drop for the fall weekend. The fee for the weekend includes staying two nights and all your meals and supplies are included.

All the workshops focus on learning new outdoor skills.  Early registration is required to get your favorites as you can only choose four. Some of the sessions were firearms and safety, field dressing and butchering a deer, frog gigging, hand gun basics, alpine tower climbing, kayaking, soap making, basic canoeing, introduction to muzzle loading, metallic cartridge reloading, fly fishing basics, outdoor photography, backyards for wildlife, introduction to archery with compound and cross bows, basic shotgun, basic tracking, trail food, tree stands 101, dutch oven cooking, walk on the wild side and basic rifle. I was extremely happy with the workshops I took. As a matter of fact – I loved them!!!

Unfortunately, the attendance was down this year so I am doing my best to spread the word about this extraordinary opportunity to be trained in new skills by qualified instructors. Learning four new skills in one weekend with the comradery and encouragement of other woman is hardly ever found these days.

My parents taught me to love the outdoors but I never had the chance to learn many of these skills from them. So this is a great way to make new friends while increasing my outdoor skill level. Plus learning with other woman is similar to when I was a girl scout and learned basic outdoor skills as a young girl. This is the adult advanced version and continues a lifelong love of nature and gives me additional ways to enjoy my leisure time.

So check out the details at www.ohiodnr.com/wildlife - click on Woman's Programs and http://wildlife.ohiodnr.gov/education-and-outdoor-discovery/becoming-an-outdoors-woman . Reserve some time on your calendar next October and sign up as soon as it is announced so you get your first choices of workshops. You won’t regret it if you love to outdoors as much as I do!
